Reel Injun (2009) is a documentary tracing the evolution of the “Hollywood Indian” from the birth of cinema, until the emergence of films made by Indigenous people. Cree director Neil Diamond embarks on a road trip across North America to meet directors, activists, and Native Americans involved in the industry to show how they fought stereotypes and clichés. From silent films to Westerns, and the classic Dances with Wolves, Diamond shows how the “Hollywood Indian” has evolved but has always been more about White America’s anxieties than about Native Americans’ real lives.

Advocating for films about Indigenous people made by Indigenous people, Reel Injun is an introduction to more Indigenous (and queer) films at QFN in 2023.
