In this very special screening we will see three films that intimately explore the lives of queer people living in rural spaces and their relationship to nature. Alongside Niall Moorjani’s beautiful non-binary selkie tale.
Made by the very own QFN team A Different Home asks what “home” means for queer people who live in a city but grew up in a rural place. Interviews layered on Scottish landscape shots explore the tensions between craving a rural life and thriving in an urban queer community. Interviewees share their sense of belonging to and alienation from both cities and rural spaces. Directed by Jules Lacave-Fontourcy cinematography & editing by Mitchell Morton and sound by Nicolas Jarnoux. Our very first QFN production!
Marram directed by Elspeth Turner and Robbie Jones tells the story of a family on a Scottish Hebridean island. While they are going to great lengths to understand and revive a beloved son, the marram grass they need to thatch the roof over their heads recedes from a gradually eroding coastline. The film is in gaelic.
West of the Horizon directed by Barra Mac Ainmhire takes us to the West Coast of Ireland. A chance encounter on the Coast of Connemara between a runaway trans-teenager and bereaved suicidal fisherman sees the two form an unlikely connection…
Selkie by Niall and India Moorjani is a queer retelling of a selkie myth. The film follows the titular “Selkie” on their journey to finding a fluid sense of self in a seemingly binary world. The two mediums of visual and audio-storytelling combine to transport the viewer on a gorgeous, at times meditative, but also emotional journey across semi-mythicised Scottish spaces; from sea to land, bay to glen and sand to snow. At its core the Selkie is a queer exploration of complex liminal identities surrounding race and gender.
Join us for an evening of films rooted in nature and the sound of waves. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion with some of the directors.
The venue and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and the films will have subtitles. Let us know if you have any access requirements.
